Food Supply Chain Management

With many years of experience and knowledge of different perspectives within the food supply chain, Florian is one of the food supply chain professionals at the faculty VII of the University of Bayreuth. Born and raised in Cologne, Germany, Florian took an early interest in food supply chain related topics.

After his A-levels he started an apprenticeship as a winegrower, thus, starting his working life at the very beginning of a food supply chain - in agriculture. With a rising passion for food related topics, he decided to continue his hands-on approach by working as a chef. After completing his 3-year apprenticeship as a chef in 2013, Florian decided to take his passion to an academic level by starting a dual study programme (B.A. in Retail Management) at Germany’s biggest food retailer, EDEKA. During the 3-year degree programme he also completed an apprenticeship in wholesale. In his bachelor studies Florian focused on sustainability issues, researching the effects of sustainability labelling on the communication of sustainability efforts for his thesis. On completion of his studies in 2016, he worked at EDEKA at the department for procurement and purchasing of fruits and vegetables (EDEKA Fruchtkontor), specialising in the trade of exotic fruits and vegetables.

While still full-time employed, Florian continued his academic career by starting a part-time master’s programme (M.Sc. Logistics) in late 2018. After obtaining his degree in January 2021, he decided to focus on a broader perspective of the food supply chain and continue on the academic track, starting his PhD programme at the University of Bayreuth in May 2021. With both academic and hands-on experience, Florian strives to contribute to research and education on all food supply chain related topics.
